Apart from the six years when I was chained to a desk as a staff editor with Fine Homebuilding Magazine, and the Journal of Light Construction, I've spent most of my working life as a carpenter and freelance writer. My building career began with an apprenticeship with Carpenter’s Local #12 in Syracuse, NY. My expertise includes commercial and residential construction, finish carpentry, remodeling and historical restoration.
In addition to FHB and JLC, my work has been published in This Old House, Builder, Fine Woodworking, Tools of the Trade, Professional Deckbuilder, Bicycling, American Bicyclist, Bicycle Times, and other publications.
I never planned for it to happen, but in recent years much of my workday has been devoted to volunteer efforts, most of which have been focused on improving the quality of life in Western Connecticut, primarily by making it safer and easier for people to get outdoors and walk or bike.
