Carpenter, Journalist, Community Advocate

Apart from a half-dozen years as a staff editor with Fine Homebuilding Magazine, and the Journal of Light Construction, I've spent most of my working life as a carpenter and freelance writer. I started my building career by serving a 4 -year apprenticeship with Carpenter’s Local #12 in Syracuse, NY. My expertise includes commercial and residential construction, finish carpentry, remodeling and historical restoration.
My written work has also been featured in This Old House, Fine Woodworking, Builder, Tools of the Trade, Professional Deckbuilder, Bicycling, American Bicyclist, and Bicycle Times, and other publications.
I’m also deeply committed to community service. The bulk of my volunteer work has focused on improving the quality of life in Western Connecticut: Preserving the environment and the historical character of this beautiful place, and making it safer and easier for people to get outdoors and move about using muscles rather than motors.
My desire to effect positive change also led me (reluctantly) into politics. In 2018, I was recruited to run for State Representative in Connecticut’s 67th District; the following year I agreed to run for Mayor of my town (New Milford, CT). Although both races were losing efforts, they gave me the opportunity to meet thousands of neighbors, listen to their concerns, and empathize with their hardships. No regrets.
